Carnival UpdateFreedom 200Freedom 200 is the Arts Units Summer Carnival Project. We are celebrating the abolition of slavery in the UK two hundred years ago. In Trinidad, traditional mas (carnival) had revellers smearing themselves in mud, soot, oil & paint and they would dance and make music. So we thought, how can we convey this to the modern day and celebrate emancipation? The answer ... lets smear ourselves in chocolate spread and dance and make music through the streets of Sandown and Ryde. This project is all about fun, music, making new friends and creating a very easy way for people to participate in carnival, perhaps that have never taken part before. NO elaborate costumes, just simple adorments and plenty of chocolate, music and jumping up. MAS CAMP - Costume Making We are starting the project with a week of costume making at the Ryde Carnival Annexe at the top of St Johns Road. This begins Monday the 20th of August, each day from 1pm to 6pm. This is completely optional. We would love your help and plan to have lots of fun. Each evening we will have a social activity (eg. BBQ on the beach, Derek Sandy sings at the Appley Cafe on the Tue evening etc). We will be making basic devil costumes (horns, tridents, tails) and a couple of very traditional Jab Molassie costumes and Imps to accompany them. Again, the idea is to keep the costumes as simple as possible, using scrap foam, cardboard and paints. SANDOWN ILLUMINATED CARNIVAL - Driftwood Beachbar'n' Grill Then it begins on Wednesday evening, the 29th of August at the Driftwood Beachbar 'n' Grill with the Sandown Illuminated Carnival. Our friends from PURELIME.co.uk, Nottinghill, will be there from mid afternoon to brew the chocolate and enjoy the sun. Come anytime, but the action starts from 7pm, with the "mud" going on at 8:30pm. You can register now and reserve your spot or turn up and pay on the day. The Driftwood will have a BBQ going so you can purchase supper and chill out before the action starts. The islands favourite Trinbagan, Derek Sandy, will joining us on our sound truck, singing a few of his tunes (Reggae Walk) and jumping up with our Soca tracks. So if you fancy a carnival jump up with Derek, put the 29th in your calendar. RYDE ILLUMINATED CARNIVAL - Appley Beach The final event is at the brilliant Ryde Illuminated Carnival on September the 1st. We will be meeting down on Appley Beach (exact location to be confirmed) around 6:30pm. The mud will go on at about 8pm and we will make our way into the procession at around 8:30pm. We will again be taking out our sound truck and this time we will be joined by the Rampage Mas Band from Luton and also a Stilt walking group from Luton. Emancipation is the theme Rampage chose this year and they are keen to join in the celebration with us. Ryde Illuminated Carnival always draws a big crowd so we are looking forward to bringing something a bit different to the crowds there.
